The Star Trek Universe

May 11th, 2009

The Star Trek universe isn’t really designed as a continual story like Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica. You can start almost anywhere.

If you like good writing and don’t care about good special effects or film sets, you could check out the original series. The writing was really good back then, but the production was very cheap. If you like original Doctor Who, you might be fine with this.

Star Trek

Star Trek

If you want a more modern version with updated production value, try the Next Generation. Roddenberry was still writing for the first part of this series, and by season 2 it starts to get pretty good.

Deep Space nine and the rest, I personally never really cared for, and they tend to fall outside the “core” universe of characters. Also, Roddenberry was no longer around and the execs in charge at Paramount were really just trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise at this point.

As for the latest movie: since nobody has seen it, it’s hard to say. I would suggest watching a little of the TV series (either) and maybe the first 4 movies. All of those will give you a pretty good feel for the characters.

Note: Next Generation probably won’t give you any reference to characters in the next movie, but it was a decent show and gave a good representation for that universe.

The Rebirth of Star Trek

February 4th, 2010

Andrew Hawnt asked:

Could it be true? It looks as though the unthinkable has happened- a new Star Trek movie that will bring the franchise back from the edge of oblivion. After Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis failed to set the box office alight, Star Trek: Voyager coming under fire from fans during its final years and the prequel series Enterprise being canned after four seasons, it looked as though the Star Trek franchise was about ready to fade away. After being one of the most respected and long running genre franchises in history (only outdone by Doctor Who), it was losing fans, ratings and attention in huge quantities. With the cast if the Next generation movies now out of their contracts and the studio seemingly out of ideas for the series, the only way to go was to start over again.

The notion of a prequel movie started to circulate as soon as the Enterprise series left the air. The main idea was a Starfleet Academy film featuring the early years of Kirk and Spock and the other original Star trek characters. This rumour proved to be closer to the mark than fans could imagine. JJ Abrams, of Alias, LOST and Cloverfield fame (amongst everything else he’s been involved with), was chosen to bring back Star Trek for the modern era. The original series was to become a brand new feature film from paramount, with an all new cast playing those iconic 1960s roles. This sent something of a stir through the fan communities. How could these roles be played by anyone other than their original stars? The characters of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and everyone else in the original crew have become such cultural mainstays that this was seen as nothing short of sacrilege.

But as news filtered through of casting for the new film (simply titled Star Trek, and not Star Trek XI or otherwise) and spy photos showed glimpses of design work, many fans started to wonder if this could actually be something rather special. With the casting of Heroes star Zachary Quinto as Spock, it became clear that the makers of this new vision of Gene Roddenberry’s legendary science fiction show were taking it seriously. This wasn’t just a cynical attempt at one last hurrah for the franchise- it was to be a bold reinvention for a new generation. With further casting came more surprises, Chris Pine as Captain James Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as McCoy, and so on. The faces and talents fit perfectly, and with the first teaser trailer, fans had something real to prove that this was actually happening. Star trek was coming back, and doing so in style.

Plot-wise, it is a time travel story, which the Star Trek universe has been known for since the start. The coup for this production came with the news that the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, was to reprise his famous role and interact with his younger self, to help combat the effects of what the film’s villain, Nero (played by Eric Bana) has put into play. As pictures and story details filtered through into the public domain, anticipation grew steadily, and here we are at a point where fans are still sceptical to a certain extent, but are extremely excited to see their beloved franchise reborn.

Star Trek, the gargantuan legend of TV, film, merchandise, comics, books and more, is being dealt yet another chance, and this time it looks as though it will be much more effective than the last few attempts. The legend is coming back, with a powerful new cast, a string new story, and a production that surpasses all that has gone before. As long as fans can keep an open mind when watching the film, then this may well be the start of a real ‘next generation’ for the legend that is Star trek. The mythos is in safe hands that are treating Roddenberry’s vision with respect while creating something new, vital and most wonderfully uplifting. Welcome back, Star Trek. We’ve missed you.

Everybody Still Loves Lucy

February 2nd, 2010

Dror Klar asked:

Has there ever been a greater female comedian than Lucille Ball? Her unique comedic style made her loved by millions all over the world. When she passed away in 1989, it took away one of the funniest women that has ever been on television. So many of us grew up watching her Lucy shows and there were several different ones over the years.

Lucy was born in 1911. In 1925, Lucy went to a New York drama school with Bette Davis. Lucy dropped out later because they did not think she would have a career in acting. Boy, were they ever wrong.

In the following days, she was a fashion model and did some Broadway. The first movies she played in were not that great, although she did do some filming with The Marx Brothers and The Three Stooges. It was in 1940, while filming a movie called Too Many Girls, that she met Desi Arnaz.

They eloped a year later. He was the true love of her life. Lucy and Desi had many problems during their marriage, but stayed together off and on until they finally divorced in 1960. Lucy and Desi had two children together, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Lucy was doing a radio show in 1948 called My Favorite Husband. It was very popular and led to the television hit, I Love Lucy. We all know how that turned out. Lucy insisted that she and Desi be allowed to play in the show together.

At first CBS was not crazy about the idea, but they came around. Later, The I Love Lucy Show evolved into The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. These shows are still watched by millions all the time in rerun on satellite and cable television channels.

After her divorce from Arnaz, Lucy also starred in The Lucy show, which ran from 1962 through 1968 and then, Here’s Lucy, from 1968 through 1974. She also starred in several movies during this time. She did two movies with Desi, The Long, Long Trailer in1954, and Forever Darling in 1956. She made Yours, Mine, and Ours with Henry Fonda and Mame with Rosalind Russell.

Desi and Lucy also shared the production company, Desilu. Eventually after their divorce Lucy bought out Desi’s share. She was one of the first women to head a production company. They say she was good, but sometimes tough.

The production company had several hit shows over the years such as Star Trek, Andy Griffith, Make Room for Daddy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and more. Lucy has truly been irreplaceable because she was one of a kind

The Juicy Bits on Battlestar Galactica Cast

January 31st, 2010

Joel Owens asked:

Battlestar Galactica Casts List

Edward James Olmos: Commander William Adama

Edward wanted to be a professional baseball player. But he ended up trying to be a rock star. Imagine that, commander William Adama, rocking it with his garage bands at the tender age of 15. My research tells me that he was really into it too. He had lots of experience, even though his band never made it big time. They played in the Sunset Strip All this was before he considered becoming an actor. As an actor, he was in the original Miami Vice. He was Lt. Martin Castillo. He is also a very active activist (however redundant that sounds). His favorite causes are those for that deal with children’s rights. The man served as a UNICEF ambassador and was awarded several honors.

Mary McDonnell: Laura Roslin

The always beautiful Mary Mc Donnell plays Madam President in the Battlestar Galactica universe. Mary was first famous for her work in theater on the East Coast. But most of you Battlestar Galactica Casts fans should realize that she was that girl with Kevin Costner’s movie “Dancing with Wolves”. She was an Indian girl there. The role was a very riveting and it got her nominated for an Oscar. Mary’s got two kids namely Micheal and Olivia. She’s been teaching courses in acting, had a brief stint in the T.V. show “ER,” and is a huge huge fan of the great English actress Vanessa Redgrave.

Katee Sackhoff: Lt. Kara Thrace a.k.a. “Starbuck”

Here’s the juicy bits on Starbuck, Katee Sackhoff’s tattoo. She’s got a tattoo of the word choice spelled in Japanese characters. She’s also got a nice crucifix tattooed to her shoulder with some inscriptions in Latin that read: public property. Those tattoos just add up to her hotness. She also does yoga and runs for around ten miles every weekend. That’s probably why she’s super toned. Her Battlestar Galactica casts mate Tricia Helfer is her real life best friend. Katee is s big Star Trek fan.

Jamie Bamber: Captain Lee Adama a.k.a “Apollo”

Jamie, or Bambini as his friends call him, is a married man with three kids. He’s got some Irish blood in him from his mother and was raised in a family of seven brothers and sisters. The man plays a variety of sports, from swanky golf to rough rugby. He also dances, loves horseback-riding, skiing, and rap-music. He studied literature of the French and the Italian. The Bambino also graduated from Cambridge with a First Class Masters honors in Modern languages. That’s the highest award; the man’s a scholar as evidenced by his favorites: The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Someone once asked him about who would like to meet, he answered: Shakespeare, Garibaldi, Jesus Christ, and King Henry the fifth. He’s also one of the most sought after of the Battlestar Galactica casts by female fans.

The Legacy Of Star Gate Sg-1: Is It More Than Meets The Eye?

January 29th, 2010

Bill Knell asked:

A legendary science fiction series is ending. Star Gate SG-1 will begin the last season of its long run in April 2007 on the Sci-Fi Channel. This is very bad news for SG-1 Fans who have invested ten years and over 200 episodes in the long-running saga. But is there more here than meets the eye?

SG-1 has a loyal fan following. That is best explained by the fact that it blends old style science fiction with new. The scripts give you time to get to know the characters without slowing down the action. More importantly, the emphasis has always been on the storylines, not the personal lives of the cast members.

NBC owns the sci-fi channel and that conglomerate has a reputation for ruining popular shows and storylines with endless morality lessons that teach feel good values and anti-establishment messages. SG-1 remained strangely untouched in that area. In fact, the Air Force has been a supporter of the show for some time.

It wasn’t long ago that SG-1 Executive Producer Richard Dean Anderson (who plays Brig. Gen. Jack O’Neill on the series) was honored by U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, General John P. Jumper. The series was given kudos for continuous positive depiction of the U.S. Air Force and Anderson was made an honorary brigadier general. Given the series storyline, this all seems a bit odd.

While it can easily be argued that SG-1 does present the U.S. Air Force in a positive and respectful way, can the same be said of Anderson’s alter ego? Jack O’Neill is hardly the poster boy for the behavioral standards of a U.S. Military Officer. He often disrespects superior officers, seems to do his duty in a semi-conscious state, ignores or disobeys orders and disregards military protocol.

I’m sure that the Air Force understands the need for some comic relief supplied by Anderson’s O’Neill character. However, I find it hard to believe that Anderson would receive such an honor just for producing a good sci-fi show and making the Air Force look good. I believe something else might be happening here, whether on purpose or by proxy.

Everything I have read about SG-1 and its production tells me there is probably no conscious effort to allow the show to be used as some sort of U.S. Government Propaganda tool. However, the series is a natural for it. Consider these observations:

- SG-1 continuously presents the idea that the U.S. Government is keeping the existence of alien life and contact with them secret for all the right reasons. The message: Secrecy is for your own good.

- There are rogue elements within the Government that exploit the connection between Aliens and the Government. They do that to obtain secret technology and are willing to sell out their own kind to obtain it. The message: Good cop bad cop, but the end result is basically the same.

- Dr. Frank E. Stranges is Founder and President of the National Investigations Committee on UFOs. I have been honored to share a stage with him on several occasions for speaking engagements and join him for a press conference. His book, Stranger at the Pentagon, tells the story of his meeting during the 1950s with an extra-terrestrial named Commander Thor (that’s Supreme Command Thor for SG-1 Fans) at the Pentagon. Although Dr Stranges tells us that his Thor is more humanlike and not physically akin to the Ascard on SG-1, there are many similarities between the real Thor and the Ascard fictional civilization. The Message: Educate the public on what’s really going on through a fictional series and they are likely to accept the truth when the U.S. Government decides to tell all.

- The Ascard are portrayed as a group of small, gray aliens with large eyes that help the humans, but only after years of abducting them. The Abductions are to solve a DNA problem the Ascard are having and allow them to better understand humans. The payoff is that they protect us from bad aliens and help us to technologically advance. The message: Despite the fact that people have become lab rats for Aliens, it’s all-good.

- Aliens have been visiting the Earth for thousands of years. While some are good, some bad, they come regardless of our military readiness to resist. We cannot remain a solitary planet in a sea of populated worlds and expect to be ignored or left alone. The Message: The Aliens are going to do what they want anyway, so we had better make treaties with the good aliens. If that means losing some personal freedoms and getting abducted for study, it’s a small price to pay for being at peace with our galactic neighbors.

- The use of the names of real places like Area 51 and the complex at Cheyenne Mountain. The Message: The government has places where secret technology and alien artifacts may be securely kept.

- The never-ending secret of the Star Gate program. Despite battles in the skies over Earth, tattletale characters and near misses, the gate manages to remain secret. The Message: The Government can keep a secret for an unlimited period of time and against all odds.

Considering the fact that many of the themes and storylines used in SG-1 come right out of the real UFO and Alien Playbook, it’s little wonder that the Air Force loves this show and has supported it for so long. But are they also setting things in motion behind the scenes? It’s no secret that the U.S. Military has invested heavily in remote viewing and psychic intervention programs.

Whether by subtle suggestion or creative angst, SG-1 has risen to the top. While the series may come to an end for now, it’s doubtful that SG-1 will vanish off the radar screen. Despite a recent ratings dip, over 2,000,000 people still tune in each week to watch and that is a very respectable number. Sales of the series on DVD have been brisk and a number of conventions are held and well attended annually. There is talk of SG-1 films and, who knows, the series can always make a return to television just as Star Trek did. Read more at http://www.ufoguy.com

Unique Weddings For Unique People

January 22nd, 2010

Valorie Jay asked:

Themed wedding are a great alternative to the more traditional wedding. They are perfect for couples who find most weddings to be stuffy and boring. A themed wedding can be as casual and light hearted as you want. Chances are, you guests will not soon forget your wedding.

When planning a themed wedding, consider what you and your partner have in common. Is there anything that either one of you are particularly passionate about? Often times, you are able to work your passion into the theme of the wedding.

There are many great ideas out there for a themed wedding. A Roaring Twenties wedding can be a fun and exciting time. You could incorporate swing music into the wedding. The wedding dress could be based on the 1920’s era.

Maybe the 1920’s are less to your liking, then maybe consider a 1960’s wedding. Guests will love the peace signs, psychedelic colors and flowers strewn about.

If the couple are sports fans, then perhaps a sports themed wedding is in order. The groomsmen could dress in their favorite sports uniforms, while the bridesmaids can dress as cheerleaders. You could also incorporate the wedding theme into the party favors. For instance, you could give out baseballs or hockey pucks.

Another idea for a themed wedding is a Fairyland wedding. The bride could easily add wings to her dress, while the guests dress in various mythical creatures.

Hawaiian themed weddings are a fun way to go. Both the bridal party and wedding guests can dress in Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and fresh leis. For decorations, you could have a few surfboards strategically placed. Tropical drinks served in coconuts would be a huge hit with your guests.

Perhaps a pirate themed wedding is more to your liking. You could decorate the reception hall to resemble a deck of a ship or an old saloon. You could add hooks for hands, peg legs and eye patches to your attire. Wedding gifts could easily be stored in a treasure chest.

With a Stars Wars Wedding, Princess Leia could marry Han Solo. The best man could dress up as Chewbacca, while the couple is married by Darth Vader.

If you are a Star Trek fan, you could have your wedding on the bridge of the Enterprise. The best man could be dressed as Mr. Spock, while one of the groomsmen dresses as Chekhov, Scotty and Sulu. You could have your wedding reception resemble an interplanetary meeting of Romulans, Klingons, Vulcans and Andorians.

Perhaps Lord of the Rings is more your style. You could dress up as Arwen and Aragorn and get married. You could have the wizard Gandalf perform the ceremony, while children play the part of little hobbits.

When it comes to a themed wedding, the possibilities are endless. Your imagination is your only limitation. So if you are a fun spirited person, go with it and have a fun themed wedding.

Is “Future Shock” Already Upon Us ?

January 20th, 2010

Ian Williamson asked:

In 1970, Alvin Toffler’s book “Future Shock” predicted a world in which technology evolved so quickly society was stunned, unable to adjust, succumbing to “shattering stress and disorientation”. A decade later, John Naisbitt took a less cataclysmic look, focused on the next decade, with “Megatrends - Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives”; he updated that in 1990 with “Megatrends 2000″.

Toffler proved to be both right and wrong. “Future Shock” did attack millions of people, but primarily those in the newly freed nations of the former Soviet Bloc, especially Russia itself. Hundreds of immigrants pouring out of those nations to the United States in the 1990s reportedly returned complaining about “too much choice”.

Even a worldly British author and high tech consultant who spent the 1990s living and working in Southern California and Washington, DC, will soon publish a book about his American experience that includes a chapter on how even Western Europeans can be overwhelmed by American-style consumerism. The working title? “A Cornucopia of Confusing Consumer Choices: Forty-Five Types of Shredded Wheat?”

What Toffler failed to foresee was the ease with which Americans, Canadians and, within the dominion of their own societies, the rest of the “developed” world not only would accept but often demand faster implementation of new technologies. Generations raised on Star Trek and Star Wars did not merely anticipate desktop computers, instant global information access, hand-held global “communicators” and robots, they built them.

Some of Naisbitt’s predictions, such as a rise in home-based “networking”, were amazingly on target, especially considering he never used the words Internet, e-mail, global positioning system (GPS) - none of which as yet existed - nor terrorism, arguably four of the most important factors driving late 20th and early 21st Century society.

Perhaps the most astounding - and controversial - look at our technology-based future came in 2001, when Ray Kurzweil, one of the world’s most honored inventors, authors and futurists, published his “Law of Accelerating Returns”.

“An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense ‘intuitive linear’ view. So we won’t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st Century - it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today’s rate). The ‘returns’, such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There’s even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity - technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and non-biological intelligence, immortal software-based humans and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light.”

And that is only the opening paragraph! (The entire piece is available at http://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art0134.html?printable=1).

Kurzweil’s “law” helps explain what Toffler feared and Naisbitt sought to analyze. As to whether Kurzweil is qualified to make such bold statements, consider his remarkable biography at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kurzweil. Or simply Microsoft chairman Bill Gates’ 2005 description of him as “the best at predicting the future of artificial intelligence”.

Given Kurzweil’s Law, Naisbitt’s “Megatrends” and Toffler’s “Future Shock” already are being dwarfed by the speed of technological advance. Any new version of either book would have to be electronically published to avoid being comically out-of-date before ever reaching a bookstore.

Consider a few examples of where we are headed in the next 20 years or so:

Military doctors already are looking to field, within a decade, an early version of Star Trek’s medical tricorder - not hoping, not expecting, but planning.

The US Army’s Future Warrior, the combat infantry ensemble circa 2020, has been called everything from a futuristic medieval knight’s suit of armor to a Star Wars’ Imperial Trooper. But Future Warrior is an evolutionary process, with the first elements now on their way to US troops in Southwest Asia, for whom small robots that perform dangerous tasks such as checking for explosives at roadblocks already are considered honored and invaluable teammates.

Hydrogen fuel cells the size of soda cans have been powering TV field cameras for the past two years; people all over the globe can flip open their own “communicators” and not only talk to anyone anywhere, but take and send photos and movies, listen to music, download information, send and receive text messages, obtain precise GPS locations - even Mr. Spock would be likely to raise an eyebrow and mutter, “Fascinating”.

Kurzweil’s Singularity foresees a time - perhaps within the next two decades - when it will be possible to download a human being’s memories and personality into a computer. Add an advanced and highly realistic avatar based on that individual’s actual appearance (at any age) and an equally accurate voice synthesizer and it will be possible to have a real-time, original conversation with a dead relative or teacher. Imagine Einstein or Mozart or da Vinci preserved for all time.

The religious implications, of course, are obvious, as are the legal and societal: With AI Grandpa still own his house? Will flesh-and-blood Grandma be able to remarry? Is erasing an AI personality disk murder? And for writers and publishers, if copyrights continue for 70 years after the author’s death, is an AI author dead - or immortal?

Nanotechnology - microscopic machines - and microbiology are expected to combine to enable the repair of almost anything that goes wrong with any part of the body. No chemotherapy, no contact lenses, no open heart surgery, just an injection of thousands of tiny robotic surgeons programmed to deal with the problem.

Experiments already have been performed to enable two people to share sensory perceptions. In others, robotic limbs have been activated by subjects thinking about moving their own arms or legs. Such bioelectronic advances are expected to enable quadriplegics to walk away from their wheelchairs, possibly within a generation.

Consider:

- In 1906 we had just witnessed the first flight of a heavier-than-air manned aircraft, a flight that lasted less than the wingspan of a Boeing 747. Six decades later, we were walking on the Moon.

- In 1906, few people had access to a very cumbersome, expensive and unreliable telephone system and radio was still an experiment; today, you can watch television on your cellphone.

- In 1906, the average life expectancy in the US was 46.9 for men, 50.8 for women; today, it is 74.5 for men and 79.9 for women, according to US government tables. But many futurists say for those of us now living, the trick will simply be to live long enough . . to live forever - which they believe the merger of biology and technology will make possible, in one form or another, within a generation.

“Future Shock” and “Megatrends” were products of the late 20th Century, when Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns was just beginning to reach the Tipping Point — “that dramatic moment when something unique becomes common”. In contrast, the 21st Century will require entirely new legal, sociological, philosophical, religious, political, moral and personal concepts.

Perhaps it is - 250 years earlier than claimed by the 1990s TV show “Babylon 5″ - truly the “dawn of the Third Age of Mankind”.
